Whether high school students should be given the freedom to evaluate and criticize their teachers is a challenging issue in education. some people support this practice while others believe that it will be hard for the teachers to maintain classroom order and to retain students’ respect. Personally, I agree to the latter opinion, which is based on the following three reasons.
First of all, it is difficult for high school students to adopt a completely objective attitude towards their teachers when they are required to perform an evaluation task. They are young teenagers, immature and full of unrealistic expectations. Therefore, it can be predicted that there will be more undeserved negative comments on teachers than positive ones. Furthermore ,the evaluations that the naïve students give may lead to a popularity contest among teachers, who will endeavor to gain favors from the students and compete for higher rankings rather than be than be competent and responsible teachers.
Secondly, if given the freedom to criticize their teachers, backward students may tend to attribute their poor academic performances to the abilities of their teachers without making great efforts to study. This is obviously unfair for their teachers and harmful to their academic
improvements. Meanwhile, if teachers receive too many unwarranted criticisms, it will be really hard for them to concentrate on their instruction and one bad consequence is that they will lose the motivation and confidence to teach.
Lastly , if high school students are free to assess their teachers, they tend to have a psychological advantage and even misbehave in an intolerable way because they think teachers are at their mercy. A common phenomenon in many schools is that some teachers do not criticize and correct problem students since they are afraid of being revenged when it comes to students’ evaluation .As a result, teachers are bound to lose their authority and even self-respect in the classrooms.
In conclusion, giving high school students the freedom to evaluate and criticize their teachers is definitely not an appropriate method of school management .on the contrary ,this practice will not only disturb teachers and disrupt classroom order but also tend to indulge students who misconduct themselves and leave themselves no space for improvement.
